In recent months I have had 2 incidents where a potential client contacted me only to have it slip thru my fingers. Did I do anything wrong? Well, only if you consider being good at your job a hindrance.
I was on the phone several times with the first client for almost 2 weeks. Each time we discussed the nature of their case and the progress they were making in procuring the documents to send to me. It was stressed how the opposing side was continuously stating that they were going to take this to court and they already had their handwriting expert retained and on the case. My client was attempting to get the same documents that their expert examined to submit to me.
Then one day, my client called and informed me that he was contacting the opposing counsel to get some final documents while repeating their resolve to want to "take this case as far as it could go." I said that I looked forward to receiving the exemplars and doing business with him.
My website has a feature in the codes where I can track who and from where I get traffic. The very day my potential client contacted the opposing firm, an IP address from the location of this firm came into my website directly, not via a search engine (which means they knew my URL and typed it into the address field). They left my site by way of a link to Don Lehew's website and re-entered my site via C urt B aggett's.
The very next day my potential client called and said that the law firm who was so aggressively pursuing civil action had contacted him that morning to say they "decided to settle out of court". It didn't appear that they needed my services but would keep my info on file if by chance they get another forgery case.
The second potential client called with an issue of alleged fraudulent signatures by an employee. Again arrangements were made for them to fax me the questioned documents along with known exemplars from the personnel records. Evidently the office grapevine travels fast around the water cooler and coffee machine at this company. Within 24 hours the suspected employee found out that management was hiring a handwriting expert and he came forward and confessed.
Is there was a way to charge a retainer fee just for providing a reputation?
Just goes to show that when the guilty parties see us on the other end of the card table, they realize that it's better to fold their losing hand rather than bluffing.
